Updates on campus closing incident on Feb. 28, 2019

Update 3 -  March 1, 2019, 1:53 p.m.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

On the evening of Feb. 28, Lakeland was notified by Kirtland police that someone was in possession of weapons on our campus. As a precaution, the Lakeland police department immediately activated the campus public address system and began searching the campus with the help of local police and fire departments. The emergency alert text system was also activated. After a sweep of all campus buildings, it was determined that the threat was not credible. Fortunately, no one was injured as a result of this false threat.

I'd like to express my appreciation to Lakeland Campus Police and our local police departments for acting quickly to search and clear the campus. I'd also like to thank our faculty and staff who were on campus at the time for remaining calm and assisting our students.

We understand that this incident, while not a credible threat, can be very stressful. We have arranged for counseling services to be available to students, faculty and staff. The investigation is ongoing and updates will be provided as information becomes available.

-Morris W. Beverage Jr., president, Lakeland Community College

Update 2 -  Feb. 28, 2019, 8:25 p.m. from the Lakeland Community College Campus Police Department
At about 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019, the Kirtland police department received a call from someone claiming to be on the Lakeland Community College main campus with a gun and bomb. The call came into the Kirtland police department's main line from a web-based phone.

Kirtland police notified the Lakeland Police Department. As a precaution, the Lakeland Police Department issued a campus alert and, with the help of other local police and fire departments, closed and evacuated campus. After a sweep of all main campus buildings, there was no evidence to substantiate the threat.

The incident is under investigation. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

The campus will remain closed this evening and will reopen tomorrow, Friday, March 1, 2019.
