Congratulations to Dr. Carl Stitz and Corrie Bergeron, Dione DiMitro, Mark Guizlo and Dr. Steve Olouic, and Sue Baker and Jaci Chesnes for receiving the grants on the projects described below.
Scaffold to the Stars
Dr. Carl Stitz and Corrie Bergeron are a part of a statewide effort to make math and engineering more accessible to Ohio students. Ohio Link awarded $84,000 to Lakeland through funds it received from a Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) grant. Dozens of institutions throughout the state received funding to develop OERs to make learning math and engineering more accessible to Ohio residents.
Lakeland Mathematics Professor Dr. Carl Stitz will assist the project through July of 2012. As the co-author of digital mathematics textbooks that boast users both nationally and internationally, he will review the content to ensure that it complies with the Ohio Transfer and Assurance Guidelines and Objectives. Corrie Bergeron, instructional designer at Lakeland, will provide the technology support needed for the online learning materials for the NGLC Scaffold to the Stars Project as well as provide project management.
Geospatial Technology program
The Dominion Foundation provided a $30,000 donation to help Lakeland develop a Geospatial Technology degree and certificate program. This effort was lead by Lakeland Professor Mark Guizlo and Dr. Steven Oluic, Dean of Social Sciences and Public Service. As one of the fastest growing fields in the US, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) uses technology to capture, analyze and display information from a geographical perspective. GIS plays a role in a wide range of jobs from analysis of roadways and profiling the movement of infectious disease to emergency management and targeted marketing.
We are STEM
The Ohio Department of Education awarded Lakeland a $6,500 grant for We are STEM – girls in Science Technology, Engineering and Math. Lakeland Professor Sue Baker and Web Developer Jaci Chesnes offer a conference for area girls in Junior High and High School. The event is specifically designed to draw girls into this typically male dominated employment field. To learn more about the November 11th event, read this e-zine's In the Spotlight highlighting this important and fun day.
QuickStart
The Ohio Learning Network (OLN) awarded Lakeland $50,000 to offer adults a QuickStart to return to college. The effort, lead by Dione DiMitro, targets undereducated or underemployed adults and provides them with education and skills to move ahead in college. Lakeland will assess new students' skills and tailor education to meet their needs. QuickStart to College is intended to reduce barriers to college enrollment and promote acceleration through developmental education.
