Lakers Split Four Matches at McBride Memorial Tournament

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 13, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team finished 2-2 at the 12th Annual Shannon Lee McBride Memorial Tournament over the weekend to move to 5-7 overall on the year.  The Lakers opened with a five-set win over Genesee before falling to Mott in four sets on Friday.  Lakeland was outlasted by St. Clair County in five sets on Saturday morning but responded with a 3-0 victory over Mercyhurst North East to wrap up play in the afternoon.

In all, the Athletic & Fitness Center was home to 20 matches over the course of two days in one of the marquee events of the year.  The annual tournament, which features teams from Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York, has been a fixture on campus since 2003 and is played in honor of former Lakeland volleyball player Shannon Lee McBride. 

Each year the annual Shannon Lee McBride Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving member(s) of the team on day one of the tournament.  This year's recipients were freshmen Krista Curtis (second from left) and Casey Timko (center).  Curtis, a Willoughby native and Willoughby South grad, is majoring in nursing while Timko, a Wickliffe native and graduate of Villa Angela-St. Joseph, is an engineering major.

Lakeland Volleyball Hosts 12th Annual McBride Tournament

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 9, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team will host the 12th Annual Shannon Lee McBride Memorial Tournament on Friday, September 12 and Saturday, September 13.  The tournament will feature volleyball teams from Ohio, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania for two days of competition inside the Athletics and Fitness Center.

Volleyball Comes Up Short Against Owens

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 10, 2014) – Visiting Owens moved to 4-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play following a 3-0 victory over host Lakeland on Wednesday night inside the Athletic & Fitness Center.  The Express moved to 11-4 overall while the Lakers stalled at 3-5 overall and 2-2 in league play entering this weekend's Shannon Lee McBride Memorial Tournament on campus.

Freshman outside hitter Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) paced Lakeland with ten kills on 29 attempts while classmate Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) contributed 22 assists in the setback.

Freshman Casey Timko (Wickliffe, Ohio / Villa Angela-St. Joseph) nearly matched a career-high with 16 digs in her first start of the season at libero.

Lakers Hold Off Cincinnati State in Five Sets

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 6, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team took the first two sets against visiting Cincinnati State before holding on for a hard-fought, 3-2 victory in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) action Saturday morning.  The Lakers appeared to be on their way to an easy victory before the Surge rallied in sets three and four to force a fifth set.  Lakeland responded with a 16-14 win in the deciding set to improve to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Freshman outside hitter Elizabeth Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) led the way offensively with 21 kills while classmate Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) added 13.  Freshman setter Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out a career-high 44 assists in the victory.

Defensively four players reached double figures in digs, led by 34 from freshman libero Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South).  Curtis added 21 while freshman Casey Timko (Wickliffe, Ohio / Villa Angela-St. Joseph) posted a career-high 17 to give Lakeland a lift.

The Lakers host Owens (10-4, 3-0 OCCAC) on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in a pivotal conference match.

Lakers Edged by First Place Columbus State

KIRTLAND, Ohio (September 5, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team took first place Columbus State to four sets before falling to the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) leaders, 3-1, on Friday night.  The OCCAC loss was the first of the young season for Lakeland after opening league play with a victory over Cuyahoga on Wednesday.  The Lakers return to action on Saturday when they host Cincinnati State at 11 a.m.

Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) led the way with 15 kills while Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out 30 assists.  Casey Timko (Wickliffe, Ohio / Villa Angela-St. Joseph) and Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) led the way defensively with 13 digs apiece in the loss.

Lakeland Rallies Past Cuyahoga in Conference Opener

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ohio (September 3, 2014) – Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) posted a career-high 18 kills with just three errors to help the Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team open conference play with a 3-1 victory over Cuyahoga on Wednesday night.  The Lakers improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play entering a pair of league matches this weekend.

The freshman Spellacy added 10 digs while classmate Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) contributed 13 kills and 14 digs in the victory.  After dropping the first set 25-17, Lakeland rallied for three straight wins (25-20, 25-22, 26-24) to close out the match.  Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out a career-high 44 assists while Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) registered a career-high 36 digs for Lakeland.

The Lakers return to action on Friday (Sept. 5) when they play host to Columbus State at 6 p.m. before hosting Cincinnati State on Saturday (Sept. 6) at 11 a.m.

Lakers Finish 1-3 at Owens Invitational

PERRYSBURG, Ohio (August 30, 2014) – The Lakeland Community College women's volleyball team dispatched Kellogg Community College in the season opener before losing a trio of non-conference matches to close out the Owens Invitational over the weekend.  The Lakers (1-3) return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Cuyahoga for their conference opener beginning at 6 p.m.

Lakeland 3, Kellogg 1

Four players posted double-digit kills, led by 12 from freshman Liz Spellacy (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood), to push Lakeland past Kellogg (23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-19) in the tournament's first match.  Freshman Mary Prosuch (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) chipped in 11 kills while classmate Jessica Fontana (Thompson, Ohio / Ledgemont) added ten to go along with 12 blocks.  Freshman Krista Curtis (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) added ten kills and ten digs in the victory.

Carly Cabot (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) handed out 25 assists while Jordan Talevski (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) recorded a team-high 15 digs for the Lakers.

Lakeland 0, Jackson 3

The Lakers dropped to 1-1 overall after falling to Jackson (16-25, 22-25, 21-25) on Friday night despite 21 assists from Carly Cabot and eight kills from Krista CurtisJordan Talevski and Casey Timko (Wickliffe, Ohio / Villa Angela-St. Joseph) paced the defensive effort with nine and eight digs, respectively.

Lakeland 1, Lansing 3

Krista Curtis' 15 kills were not enough for Lakeland, which forced a fourth set before ultimately falling to Lansing (22-25, 16-25, 25-18, 21-25) on Saturday afternoon.  Carly Cabot dished out 29 assists with more than half going to the freshman Curtis. Jaclyn Butera (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) posted a career-high nine kills on 12 attempts while Danielle Talevski registered 20 digs in the loss.

Lakeland 1, Muskegon 3

Krista Curtis recorded a career-high 19 kills to go along with nine digs and seven blocks in the tough loss to Muskegon (15-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-27).  The freshman outside hitter was aided by a career-high 38 assists from classmate Carly Cabot.  Freshmen Liz Spellacy (10 kills, 16 digs) and Jessica Fontana (11 kills) paced the offensive effort while Jordan Talevski led the way defensively with a career-high 31 digs.

Former Laker Oani Named Head Coach at Chagrin Falls

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio (July 1, 2014) – Former Lakeland Community College women's volleyball player Leona Oani has been named head coach of the girls' varsity volleyball team at Chagrin Falls High School.  Oani, who spent last season as an assistant at Streesboro High School, inherits a team which went 14-8-1 last year and lost in the sectional final to Hathaway Brown.

Oani played one season under former head coach Jessica VanHorn, helping the Lakers to 14 wins including six Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) victories in 2009.  As a freshman libero, Oani led the team with 350 digs.

The Mantua, Ohio native will embark on her first season as a head coach when the Tigers open the season at Willoughby South on August 21.
