Mission
Statement - -
The Lakeland Community College campus police department exists to protect
and serve the college community with fairness, respect, and compassion.
We are committed to the anticipation and prevention of crime and the
protection
of life and property; preservation of peace, order, and safety; enforcement
of federal and state laws and college ordinances; safeguarding of constitutional
guarantees; and support of the institution’s various missions within the
Lake County Community College District. We have come to believe that at
Lakeland Community College, “security” is a process coordinated by the
campus police that requires commitment and involvement on the part of
the entire
college community. We are dedicated to the enhancement of the quality
of life on the Lakeland campus and will attempt to fulfill this important
obligation
by working as a team to effectively implement the concept of community-oriented
policing in this complex environment.

Who
We Are |
| Lakeland's
police department bears primary responsibility for safety on campus. Operating
as an autonomous police district since 1975, Lakeland police officers
are trained in law enforcement, fire safety, first aid, and hazardous
materials disposal, and exercise full police powers. The campus police
department operates a 24-hour emergency communications and dispatch center
linked directly to a regional, statewide, and national communications
system. Campus police communications officers continuously monitor security
cameras and alarm systems, and handle more than 60 walk-in clients per
day at the dispatch desk.
During 2007, the
police dispatch center processed 69,666 requests for service.
Police
communications officers service the college shuttle bus fleet by handling
calls for pickup/drop-off, and support the college switchboard staff
as
backups during non-business hours. Student employees are trained extensively
in police procedures and on the communications equipment so that they
may function effectively within the student population as extra "eyes
and ears" of the Lakeland Police Department. The police department
is also directly involved in other aspects of campus safety. Police
personnel
conduct regular crime prevention workshops with various groups on campus,
administer the regional basic police academy training program, and participate
in a variety of community organizations and programs. Police administration
and operations offices are centrally located in the basement of A-Building.

|
Contact the campus police. Persons requesting this service must provide
identification and sign a written liability waver.
The campus police department does not perform road service, but will contact
the road service company of your preference to assist you.
The Lakeland shuttle bus service operates on weekdays, evenings, and
Saturdays. The shuttle bus travels along the parking lot perimeters
to pick up passengers.
Drop-off points are the clocktower, nursing drive on the north side of
C-building, the T-building east traffic circle, and the traffic circle
on the south side of E-building. Shuttles are a key element of student
safety. They are radio-equipped and can be dispatched
to a specific location by the police communications officer. Callers
can use any parking
lot phone or college pay phone to summon a shuttle.
The campus police provide a security escort service to and from college
parking lots. To request this service, contact the campus police.
The campus police department coordinates a college-wide effort to protect
students, faculty, staff and visitors known as the "campus watch"
program. It is similar in nature to the "block watch" program
found in many local communities.
The first aid/health services office falls under the jurisdiction of the
campus police department. The staff of the first aid department, located
in Room A-5, is available for first-aid care and interim treatment of
minor injury or illness. Services provided at no charge include:
Unclaimed, abandoned and or lost and found property shall be delivered
to the Campus Police Department (Room A-2) for safekeeping. Property
owners can claim property at the police department upon demonstrating
proof of ownership. Unclaimed property which has accumulated over a
period of time will be disposed of by the college pursuant to the applicable
laws and ordinances.
