Lakeland Community College Diversity Award:

What is Diversity?

• An institution of higher learning such as Lakeland Community College should be a place where a deep respect for the diversity of peoples and their cultures exists and is positively recognized.


• A college should create an intellectual environment where different world views and life experiences are explored in a non-threatening manner and where cultural similarities and differences can be appreciated.

The Award:

• It is in this spirit that the college’s Diversity Advisory Committee and administration developed this process to recognize individuals for their work towards enhancing diversity.


• The individual selected to receive the Diversity Award will be recognized with a plaque, a resolution from the Board of Trustees, and $125 that the awardee may donate to a non-profit organization of his/her choice with a goal that is compatible with the theme of diversity.

Rules for Nomination:

• Any student or college employee is eligible for the award.


• Any student or college employee can nominate an individual for the award.


• Individuals nominated must have demonstrated work toward the goals of increasing diversity and/or decreasing discrimination at Lakeland Community College. Examples:


• Voluntary participation in campus programs that promote diversity
• Volunteering to be a "buddy" to a culturally different student/employee
• Voluntary service on committees that focus on diversity and/or the elimination of discrimination
• Directing and organizing programs for diversity
• Helping special needs students/employees
• Recruiting culturally different students or employees


• The Diversity Advisory Committee will evaluate the nominations received and select the awardee based on the criteria noted above.
