The
Tourism, Hotel & Restaurant Management program prepares
graduates for supervisory positions in the tourism, hotel
and restaurant industry. Students receive a solid
foundation in communications skills, a substantial familiarity
with the principles of effective business, a sound understanding
of the scope and operations of these industries and the
specialized knowledge, attitudes and skills employed in
successful management within these industries.
Career
Opportunities Lake County alone has nine full service
hotels and 1,808 rooms. This fact, combined with the growing
tourist industry in Lake County and the surrounding area, means
there will continue to be many locally generated jobs in this
field.
Graduates of this program have been successfully
placed in area hotels/motels since the inception of the program.
Profile The travel and tourism industry encompasses
the hospitality industry and there is substantial overlap in
the educational needs of both the travel and the hospitality
industries, but hospitality management has some specific knowledge
and skill requirements not fully covered in a more general travel
and tourism curriculum. According to the Occupational
Outlook Handbook, the predicted growth in employment is above
average through the year 2005 as the increase in both business
and leisure travel will generate expansion in the hotel/motel
industry. The handbook noted also that: "Post secondary
training in hotel or restaurant management is preferred for
most hotel management positions."
Positions in the hospitality industry include:
front desk; room management; executive housekeeper; meeting
site planner; outside sales; and loss prevention.
