The HIMT program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

Health information management technology is a profession that focuses:

  • Healthcare data
  • Management of healthcare information resources;
  • Health-related information and management systems to collect, store, process, retrieve, analyze, disseminate and communicate information related to the research, planning, provision, financing and evaluation of health services.

The Health Information Management Technology program teaches students to:

  1. Work with medical records
  2. Collect and manage statistical information code medical data
  3. Maintain health record systems control the usage and release of health information.

Training

Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT), must pass a written examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). To take the examination, a person must graduate from a 2-year associate degree program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM)

Working conditions

24/7 operation in hospitals; 2 out of 5 jobs in hospitals, the rest in physicians offices, nursing care facilities, outpatient care centers, and home health care services
