Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does Lakeland offer associate degree programs accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET), which are designed for transfer to 4-year Bachelor of Science degree programs in Engineering Technology?

Yes, we have the following TAC/ABET accredited Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree programs in Engineering Technology (ET) designed for transfer:

  • Civil Engineering Technology
  • Electronic Engineering Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology

2. Which Ohio universities have Bachelor of Science degree programs in ET?

  • Cleveland State University
  • University of Akron
  • Youngstown State University
  • University of Toledo
  • Miami University
  • University of Dayton
  • University of Cincinnati

3. What other universities offer TAC/ABET accredited ET degree programs?

  • Arizona State University
  • Purdue
  • Rochester Institute of Technology
  • Penn State
  • Texas A&M University
  • Many more, see ABET.

4. Does Lakeland offer other associate degrees designed for immediate employment?

Yes, we have the following associate degree programs designed for immediate employment:

  • Applied Electric Utility Technology (FirstEnergy)
  • Nuclear Engineering Technology (FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company)
  • Electrical Construction Technology (IBEW)
  • Computer Integrated Manufacturing Technology (Solid Works, CNC)
  • Networking & Digital Communications Engineering Technology (CISCO, A+, Microsoft)

5. Does Lakeland offer other programs related to ET?

Yes, we have numerous certificate programs ranging from 10 to 30 semester hours. See the Lakeland Catalog for details.

6. What are the differences between Engineering Technology (ET) & Engineering programs?

  • Engineering programs are 4-year programs with the first two years focusing primarily on mathematics & basic science courses. You must be prepared to start with Calculus as your first math course.
  • ET programs offer both 2-year associate & 4-year bachelor degree programs. The first two years of an associate degree program focus primarily on applied courses with extensive laboratory experience. The upper two years of a bachelor’s degree program will continue with applications & laboratory, but will introduce more advanced mathematics & basic science into the curriculum.
  • Both programs rely on the foundations of mathematics and science; however, engineering programs are more theoretical with more credit hours devoted to mathematics & basic science courses.
  • One of the distinguishing features of ET programs is the desire to provide their graduates with enough current skills so there will be a minimum training period required on the job.

7. Does Lakeland offer 4-year engineering degree programs?

No, but Lakeland offers courses in mathematics (including calculus, linear algebra, & differential equations), basic science, English composition, arts & humanities, and social science that will transfer to 4-year engineering degree programs. It is advisable to make an appointment with an academic counselor at Lakeland and/or transfer institution to design a pre-engineering curriculum.

8. What types of jobs are available for ET graduates?

A two-year Associate Degree in ET will qualify you for an entry-level position as an engineering technician. Graduates of 4-year baccalaureate programs are called engineering technologists, and they obtain similar jobs as graduates of engineering programs.

9. What do engineering technicians, engineering technologists, and engineers do?

They all work in some capacity (either: repairing, testing, selling, or designing) with today’s technology, including:

  • Computers & networking equipment (PCs, servers, switches, routers, wireless, etc.)
  • Audio & video systems (HDTV, MP3/4 players, plasma screens, etc.)
  • Medical diagnostic equipment (MRI, CT scanners, etc.)
  • Communication systems (GPS-enabled cell phones, wireless networks, etc.)
  • Advanced military systems (GPS-guided smart bombs, night vision systems, etc.)
  • Surveying and Geographic Information Systems
  • Automated control systems & robotics
  • Transportation systems
