Lakeland Community College is proud to announce…The new and improved RED HAT ACADEMY PROGRAM!

Effective Fall 2011,

• The Red Hat Academy uses the newest Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 6 (RHEL6).  There are four new courses in the program (see below).
• The Red Hat Academy is an integral part of Lakeland’s Associate Degree in Applied Business - Operating Systems and Networking Concentration. 
  • Several other IT&CS degree and certificate programs include Red Hat Academy courses as requirements or electives.
• The Red Hat Academy teaches students to become proficient in the use and administration of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
• The Red Hat Academy offers official Red Hat-developed curriculum at Lakeland’s low tuition rate.
• Instruction and course testing is hands-on and performance-based. Coursework and software is available online 24/7.
• The first two courses prepare students for the brand new Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) exam.
• The last two courses prepare students for the updated Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) version 6 exam.
• For the first time ever, certification exams are offered on Lakeland’s campus. Exams are free and available to Lakeland Red Hat Academy students only (1 per student per year). Students must successfully complete the applicable preparation courses to be eligible to take the exams.

Courses which prepare students for the RHCSA Certification - and earn the Red Hat Certified System Administrator Preparation Certificate (Note: This is a Lakeland certificate awarded for completing the coursework. Students must pass the certification exam to receive Red Hat’s RHCSA certification)

ITON1746 Red Hat Academy System Administration I Prerequisites: ITIS1005, ITON1205; or permission of instructor. This course provides students with essential skills that provide a foundation for administering Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems. Topics include graphical installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, managing storage, essential command-line commands, installing and configuring local components and network services, managing files and directories, configuring permissions, and creating and modifying users and groups. This course helps students prepare for the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) exam. . (3 Cr. Hrs.)

ITON1756 Red Hat Academy System Administration II Prerequisite: ITON1746 or permission of instructor. This course provides students with the additional skills necessary to be administrators of single Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems. Topics include network configuration, managing filesystems, working with logical volumes, advanced user and file access configuration, installation and management of services and processes, additional command-line commands, and troubleshooting. This course helps students prepare for the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) exam. (3 Cr. Hrs.)

Courses which prepare students for RHCE Certification – both courses may be taken in the same semester; each is an 8-week course. Successful completion earns the Red Hat Certified Engineer Preparation Certificate (Note: This is a Lakeland certificate. Students must pass both the RHCSA certification exam and the RHCE exam to earn Red Hat’s RHCE status.)

ITON2776 - Red Hat Academy System Administration III Prerequisites: ITON 1746, ITON 1756 or CNET 2720; or permission of instructor. This course provides students with additional security-related skills that may apply in the workplace. Topics include disk management with iSCSI, system and network activity monitoring, network management, and packet filtering.. This course helps students prepare for the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) exam. (2 Cr. Hrs.)

ITON 2786 - Red Hat Academy System Administration IV Prerequisite: ITON2776 or permission of instructor. This course provides students with additional skills in network services that may be required in the workplace. Topics include software management, web service management, file sharing across platforms, and basic SMTP management. This course helps students prepare for Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification. (2 Cr. Hrs.)

• I have taken ITON1740 Red Hat Linux Computing Essentials. How do I complete the program and coursework using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6? You do not have to start over. In Fall 2011, ITON1901Transition to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 will be offered during Fall Semester. This course will not only help you learn RHEL6, but will also count for ITON1756. It is 3 Cr.Hrs. Students who have taken both ITON1740 and ITON1750 may take this course as an elective. Contact your Linux instructor for more information.
• I already have an RHCSA and/or an RHCE. Can I get credit for these courses? Lakeland’s IT&CS department has a Credit by Certification program. The number of credits you can receive is limited. Contact one of the Linux instructors or Jennifer Crissman for more information.
