Independent Studies

There are two paths to completing a course in IT & CS using the independent study method. Students should be reminded that an independent study is just that - demonstrated mastery of the course objectives developed independently and without the structure of a classroom or regular meetings with the instructor. In general, independent studies are more work (and not less) than a traditional course and should be requested only as a last resort.

Path 1:

1. The student fills out form (available from the instructor or dean's office or by clicking here for a PDF version) and submits it, along with all supporting material, to the dean's office
2. The Dean reviews all materials
3. The Dean sends a request to the department if and only if all the following conditions are met
   • Student is eligible to graduate in the current semester or the next semester and the course requested for an independent study is a required final semester course or a direct prerequisite of a required final semester course
   • The course(s) were offered in the current term, but canceled due to low enrollment
   • The student has not yet attempted to take the course(s) in question
   • The course(s) can be offered as independent studies (in other words, there is no group or presentation requirements in the course objectives)

Path 2:

If a course cancels dues to low enrollment, the instructor may, at their discretion, request the canceled section be converted to independent study. The student(s) will need to agree that this conversion is in their best interest.
