Presents the spring semester production
Anyone Can Whistle
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by Arthur Laurents
Anyone Can Whistle is a musical that claims a very fine distinction between sanity and conformity. The Maryoress has led her town into glorious bankruptcy. To save the town she creates, with the help of her merry band of corrupt city workers and politicians, a miracle which she hopes will attract paying tourists. Unfortunately for her, during the tourist rush, the inmates of the local asylum, affectionately known as the Cookie Jar, escape and “mix” with the pilgrims. A doctor named Hapgood surfaces and claims the ability to identify the “cookies” from the normal members of society. Nurse Apple, who let her “cookies escape by accident, reappears as a consultant from Lourdes. Hapgood and Apple hook up—maybe. Does the Mayoress’s plan work? Will hilarity ensue? Perhaps one of the bravest and wittiest shows Stephen Sondheim has written (along with Sweeney Todd… and Into the Woods… and Sunday in the Park… oh never mind). Whistle contains a wonderfully haunting score and story that will resonate more today than when first produced. This is the first professional production of Anyone Can Whistle since it was done in the early seventies at Cain Park.
Set and Lighting Designer Trad Burns, Musical Director Larry Goodpaster and actor Dan Folino, the creative team behind Lakeland’s award-winning Sweeney Todd, join director Martin Friedman in presenting this production of Anyone Can Whistle.
